In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 God's word says "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." The message here is clear. Our body belongs to God, and it is our responsibility to keep it pure.
In Old Testament times, God gave the people of Israel dietary laws to observe. This account is given in Leviticus 11. Certain meats, marine crustaceans, birds, fowl, and insects were forbidden because methods for keeping foods clean and free from contamination did not exist. The Old Testament dietary laws have been abolished. God makes this known to us in 1 Timothy 4:4-5, which says, "For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer."
Today we have the resources and technology to assure our foods, are handled, cleaned, and stored properly to avoid contamination. However, in spite of all our safeguards, we still have good reason to be careful in selecting our foods. Pesticides are sprayed on our fruits and vegetables. Many food products have been genetically engineered. Genetically engineered food is a highly controversial subject. Our animals and fowl are given hormones and antibiotics, and I could only guess what they are being fed. I would encourage you to research these issues. The internet has many informative websites. Your local library is another good source.
Many factories dump their refuse into our natural water supplies. Our water companies use chlorine to kill the bacteria and viruses in our water, and they vehemently insist it is perfectly safe for the human body. However, reports have been documented which indicate that chlorine is hazardous to our health. The following link is a good source of information about chlorine: http://www.healthynewage.com/chlorine-cancer.htm. I found this website to be very enlightening. There are many other links regarding chlorine, as well as trihalomethanes (a by-product of chlorinated water). So hop on the information highway and do some research. If you are concerned about your water, you might want to consider a water filtration system for your home.
Now, I would like to take you back to God's Word, the guideline for our lives. The two Scriptures I reference here give us specific instructions pertaining to food.
Proverbs 25:16 says, "If you find honey, eat just enough—too much of it, and you will vomit." Too much of a good thing is not good!! I like the old adage, everything in moderation.
In Proverbs 23:21, God's Word says, "For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags." I reiterate, moderation.
Someone I once knew thought that just because she took B-complex it should remove the stress in her body--if only this were true! The B vitamins simply replace the B vitamins that you lose because of stress. It is up to the individual to learn how to eliminate stress.
I do not have a degree in nutrition; however, I have read and studied nutrition for many years. Also, my own personal experience has taught me how good nutrition plays a major role for a healthy body. So I do feel qualified to pass along factual information on how to make healthy choices in your life.
Please keep in mind these suggestions are my opinions and are not meant to take the place of professional medical prevention, diagnosis, or treatment.
